Senior Services

"The Senior Community is a major part of the heartbeat of the Fort Payne Community"

The Staff of the DeKalb County Council on Aging works hard daily to help ensure that the quality of living is good for the senior citizens of our county.

The Fort Payne/DeKalb County Senior Center serves as a focal point for all activities for senior citizens.

Enjoying the outdoors after retirementThe Center provides activities that enhance the senior's dignity, support independence, and encourages involvement in and with the community. The programs consist of a variety of services in such areas as education, recreation, advocacy, employment, health, wellness, nutrition, volunteering, and other support services.

The center also serves as a community resource for information on aging, and for developing new approaches to aging programs.

Retirement has many golden momentsThe DeKalb County Foundation for Aging, Inc. was founded on January 4, 1987. The corporation was organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, specifically to aid and assist the programs offered to the elderly citizens of DeKalb County through the DeKalb County Council on Aging. These programs include transportation, home care, and assistance, nutrition programs, and employment opportunities.

Senior CenterThe foundation operates the "Senior Sock It To You" employment program. This pairing and packaging hosiery mill operation employs seniors for 20 hours per week. After payroll is met, the funds are then used for support of Aging programs and activities such as the Senior Prom (an annual dance intermingling school students and senior citizens), Master's Games (senior Olympic style games), Santa's Workshop, Pass it on Down, and others that are not required by the Older Americans Act.

Public Transportation for Seniors

The DeKalb County Council on Aging works hard to fill a need in the county and the City of Fort Payne. At present, there are no public taxi services available...at least for senior citizens.

The Council on Aging provides public transportation to senior citizens of the area. This transportation is provided through funds from Section 18 of the Federal Public Transportation program, which was developed to serve the needs of the rural population. Routes are established to serve areas with the greatest needs through area surveys.

Trips may include paying bills, shopping, health care visits, recreation, or personal visits. A 24-hour notice for demand response service is requested and a small fare will be charged for a one-way trip.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of this program call 205 845 8590
