There is a wide array of property available in and around Fort Payne, and the price ranges varies from the mid-30s for a small two bedroom home to several hundred thousand dollars for a large sprawling multi-bedroom home. Buyers also have many options to choose from when selecting location. Within a few miles of downtown Fort Payne, one can choose in-town living or a home located on several acres. If your preference is for secluded wooded property with or without pasture land, we've got it in the city limits or nearby.

You might prefer to live on an exclusive golf course or on the brow of beautiful and historic Lookout Mountain. Many folks looking over our area find it very hard to make the decision between the majestic view of the mountain from a valley home or take the bird's eye view approach from atop the mountain where many full-length views of our friendly town nestled in the valley can be found.

Fort Payne hosts a limited amount of rental property. Several complexes have two and three bedroom apartments and normally have something available. Rental homes are available and usually may be located through a Realtor. A three bedroom, two bath home normally rents for $500-$650 per month.

High Educational Standards

The Fort Payne High School Fort Payne is blessed with an excellent school system as well as continuing education opportunities. The Fort Payne High School District is made up of four schools.

Modern Wills Valley Elemetary School

The ultra-modern Wills Valley Elementary School houses grades kindergarten through two.

Williams Avenue School holds grades three through five. Fort Payne Middle School is comprised of grades six through eight and Fort Payne High School educates grades nine through twelve. All four of these schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges of Schools. The student population within the city is approximately 2,600.

Fort Payne High School offers regular curriculum and college prep programs. Clubs and organizations offer diversity to students ranging from religious to sports to business and more. Competitive sports programs are equally diverse and are added as the school system grows. (top)

Colleges and Continuing Education

In addition to grade schools there are two colleges nearby - Northeast Alabama State Community College and Gadsden State Community College. Both are within easy commuting distance of Fort Payne and have qualified programs that transfer to most four-year colleges. Northeast also has "one of the best" nursing programs in the southeast.

Four-year colleges are accessible from Fort Payne as well. Jacksonville State University and the University of Alabama at Huntsville are each within an hour and a half drive. Three other major state schools are within three hours.

For those who have not completed their high school education or are in need of refresher course prior to entering college, Fort Payne and DeKalb County offer Adult Basic Education. The primary objective of this program is to assist adults in obtaining their high school degree through the General Education Development Test. Annually, nearly 150 adults graduate and receive their diploma from this program. The program also offers adult reading programs and English as a second language classes.

Although not part of the school system, the DeKalb County Public Library, located in Fort Payne, provides an outstanding source of knowledge and pastime for local residents. (top)
