Fort Payne Fire and Rescue facilities stand ready for most any emergency that may occur in the area. The main Fort Payne Fire Station (shown above) is a state-of-the-art facility constructed recently. The Fort Payne training center (shown below) is highly approved by the Alabama Fire College, and is a permanent facility that is used to train firefighters from around the region. (more)

Presently, Fort Payne's Public Swimming facility is an Olympic sized pool complete with diving boards and lifeguards. It is home to Fort Payne's youth swim team, the Aquacats. Other swimming opportunities are at DeSoto State Park's pool and designated areas on Little River.

Ponds, rivers and lakes offer bass, bream, crappie, catfish and trout within a short drive from Fort Payne.

The surrounding forests are home to deer, fox, wild turkey, quail, dove, duck, and even an occasional bobcat and coyote. DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve are minutes away offering hiking trails, camping and canoeing, opportunities for those who prefer a natural way to relax. Hunters find their bounty here with excellent opportunities to bag deer, dove, turkey, quail, duck, and more.
Indoor activities include organized volleyball and basketball for a variety of ages as well as racquetball and handball courts at the Fort Payne Recreation Center (shown at left). The Hamilton Cinema is a four-screen movie theatre that offers first-run films, often ahead of many other towns.
The Fort Payne Opera House and the revamped DeKalb Theatre (shown left) host live theater regularly though out the year and through the auspices of the Big Wills Arts Council also offer professional ballet and music from classical piano to symphony.

Special events in the area include the annual Indian Festival and Pow-Wow sponsored by the Depot Museum adjacent to Union Park, in downtown Fort Payne; the Taste of DeKalb County and the VFW Agricultural Fair featuring Cumberland Shows Carnival and Rides, all falling in October.
Civic organizations, businesses, and the city itself, offer a wide variety of Events During the Year.
