April 23, 2008 Carol Beddingfield Executive Director Chamber Chatter I want to thank everyone who has called, sent cards or food, or kept David and me in your prayers during his recent hip surgery. His recovery is going to take a little longer, but he is doing great. I cannot imagine facing health issues without insurance. I can truly understand how many individuals either do not seek medical help or risk financial devastation if they do. But an equal problem is not having an advocate for you during this critical time. David and I have had some chuckles over our different interpretation of the doctor’s instructions. The citizens of The clinic is an acute care facility, treating illnesses that will respond to medications. The volunteer staff will also refer patients for necessary diagnostic procedures and treatment beyond the scope of care the clinic can provide. Many local professionals have agreed to see a specific number of patients in their offices free of charge. Referrals are also made to hospitals and clinics which provide services on a sliding scale according to income. The clinic’s board of directors bought the old Williamson Oil building in order to provide future growth of this ministry. Volunteer labor created two waiting rooms, a triage room and several exam rooms. The volunteers who provide the services include licensed doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, dietitians, and counselors. Office personnel, phone volunteers and patient advocates keep the clinic running. There are many other volunteers who offer their particular skills in assisting patients in improving their life situations. Words of praise and appreciation cannot adequately express my gratitude to this special group of people who have truly made a difference in the lives of so many in Please join the public to see Krazy Kudzu Follies will be May 1, 2, & 3rd at the DeKalb Theatre at 6:00 PM. Carol Beddingfield
Chamber Director
After serving the citizens of Fort Payne as Director of the DeKalb County Aging Programs and the Alabama Hosiery Technology Center, Carol Beddingfield has become the seventh director of the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce.
Through her leadership, the DeKalb-Fort Payne Senior Center was created. The aging program grew from less than 10 employees to over 48. Senior citizens received various services including recreation, transportation, meals, and a free prescription drug program. A senior work program, “Seniors Sock It to You,” was developed to provide income to the senior workers as well as a service to the local hosiery industry.
As director of the Alabama Hosiery Technology and Research Center, training programs were created to enhance the skills of the employees in the hosiery industry. The programs were developed in accordance with the goal of the Center to keep the industry competitive in the world market.
“I look forward to being a part of the positive growth for the future of the City of Fort Payne. Guidance provided by the Chamber’s Board of Directors and its membership will broaden and improve our services to the community. The Chamber cannot stand alone in meeting its overall objective to be more active, more aggressive, and more responsive in promoting the City and our quality of life. After all, what an easy thing to sell – the beauty of our area and the goodness of our citizens.”
